SALON SPOTLIGHT: From Passion to Profession with Ruth Stamp
This week, Ruth Stamp from Front Lodge Beauty discusses her desire to find a trade and how that set her up for a fulfilling career.
Ruth pursued her quest for a lifelong skill—a trade that would distinguish her and open doors worldwide. She discovered her calling in the beauty industry. From an early age, she recognized her passion for painting nails and applying makeup, making her entry into the beauty field a natural decision.
"I started my career as an apprentice, in a small country salon. I wanted a skill that I could take anywhere in the world"
After her training, she transitioned to a day spa, a pivotal choice for her professional development. Not only did she work her way up to assistant manager she also managed to win an award for her skills.
"Winning IIAA’s therapist of the year for the northwest & finalist country-wide along the way. It was this that led me to start my own business."
Ruth's journey led her from the spa to becoming a thriving business owner.
Eight years ago, she was introduced to LYCON and was hooked.
"When I initially trained in intimate waxing, we were taught using a high street brand strip & hot wax – which was rather uncomfortable, shortly after this I started a new job and was introduced to LYCON , what an absolute game changer! 8 years on and I haven’t looked back, I don’t think I could ever use another brand now."
Having been in business just two years now, she is already thriving!
"I am lucky enough to be in a beautiful country setting, that is super peaceful with easy parking. The biggest contribution to my success is my loyal clients, who have been extremely supportive throughout my career."
This year, Ruth became an HBA finalist, a testament to her dedication. What did it mean to become a HBA finalist, this year mean to you personally?
“Being a HBA finalist this year showed me that I really am in the right place! It confirmed to me that even with the trickier parts of being self-employed, it’s worth it. Waxing is my passion & I know now that all the hard work I’ve put in getting to where I am now has paid off.”
Surprisingly, her favourite treatments are often overlooked by clients.
"My top treatments are the ones that people don’t think about! The areas that clients are most concerned about but can be quite embarrassed to admit, for example, waxing of sideburns, hands, neck, etc. The fact that something so quick and easy can make such a difference to somebody's confidence lifts me up!"
Likewise, Ruth has found that the most rewarding part of retailing is products is talking about products you passionate about and that you believe in wholeheartedly.
"My absolute favourite product to retail has to be anything from the X-It range! Having a product I have used myself for many years, and being able to recommend to clients knowing that they work makes such a difference. I think being able to retail a product that you know does exactly what it says on the tin gives your clients that faith in you too."
Ruth’s essential advice for aspiring salon owners is simple yet powerful.
"Choose what works for you and don’t be afraid to say no! Initially, I overextended myself trying to please others, losing a part of myself in the process. Taking the leap is daunting, and there will be both ups and downs, but it all comes together in the end."
Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledges the support she received during challenging times.
"My biggest supporters throughout this journey have been my family – who saw me through my college days & applying for my first jobs - and then my two bosses in my previous employment. I am very lucky to have a close relationship with my previous employers, who decided to close their business around the same time that I started up my own. Being able to turn to people who have experienced every high and low that comes with having a salon of your own makes such a big difference!"
Ruth reveals the most unexpected rewarding aspect of her business.
"The most rewarding part of owning my own business has to be the friendships that have come from my clients. I am so lucky that I now not only have all the benefits of being self-employed, but I also have some brilliant friends to share that with!"
What essential tips would you give to someone looking to start their own salon?
"Choose what works for you and don’t be afraid to say no! When I first started up myself, I bent over backwards doing what I thought was the right thing for other people & I lost myself a little with that! Taking the leap; is scary, and there are definitely, highs and lows that come with it, but everything works out in the end."
